needs more salt

As I’m wont to do, I wandered into a new-to-me bodega yesterday to see what weird things it had in stock. (This one: dusty-looking boxes of farina, super-fresh corn tortillas, and a wall of odds and ends that included a vegetable peeler, nude hose with 90s-era packaging, and duct tape.) What caught my eye, though, was the packs of Top Ramen in flavors I hadn’t seen since my little sister and I would buy ramen from our local Wal*Mart as a quick-cooking treat to have with dinner after our Tae Kwon Do classes, and for a whopping $1.50 I bought our four favorite flavors: beef, “Oriental,” shrimp, and the hard-to-find “Picante beef.”

JMM and I had two of them for dinner, augmented with rosé and vegetables because we’re adults and not teenagers just back from exercising: beef (drained before adding the flavor packet, as s & I spent our youth learning by experience is the optimal way to eat beef-flavored ramen) with broccoli, and shrimp with peas. The glut of farmers’ market produce we bought this morning can wait until tomorrow.
